Privacy Policy

1. Who We Are

Faseela.org is a free, non-commercial, volunteer-run service that aggregates mosque prayer timetables for the UK and Europe. We have no commercial purpose and do not generate revenue. We are not a company; we are a small volunteer project. The data controller for your personal data is Faseela.org, contactable via the /contactus form.

2. What Data We Collect

We collect a minimal amount of data necessary to operate the service:

  • Language preference cookie — faseela_lang: A single cookie containing a 2-letter language code (e.g. "en", "fr"). This cookie is set only when you actively select a language using the language switcher. It expires after 12 months. It is never transmitted to any third party.
  • Server access logs: Our web server records standard HTTP access logs (IP address, URL requested, timestamp, HTTP status code, user agent). These logs are retained for a maximum of 30 days and are used only for security monitoring and troubleshooting. They are not analysed for marketing or tracking purposes.
  • Prayer API usage logs: When you request prayer times, we store the requesting IP address, the city or mosque queried, and a timestamp in our database (MongoDB). These records are retained for a maximum of 90 days and are used only in aggregate for understanding usage patterns and improving the service. Individual records are not used to profile or track users.
  • Contact form messages: If you submit a message via the /contactus form, your name, email address, and message are sent to us by email. We do not store these in a database. We use the information only to respond to your enquiry.

3. What We Do Not Collect

We want to be clear about what we do not do:

  • We do not use Google Analytics, or any other analytics service.
  • We do not use advertising networks or tracking pixels of any kind.
  • We do not create user accounts and you cannot register on this site.
  • We do not collect your name, email address, or any other personal data except when you voluntarily submit it via the contact form.
  • We do not sell, rent, or share your data with any third party.

We also use browser localStorage to store a single flag (dismissed_new_cities_banner) that records whether you have dismissed a site notice. This is stored only in your browser and is never transmitted to our servers.

4. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)

Where GDPR applies (EU/UK residents), our legal bases are:

  • Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)): Server access logs and API usage logs are processed to maintain the security, integrity, and performance of the service. We have assessed that these interests are not overridden by your rights, given the minimal nature of the data and the short retention periods.
  • User action / consent: The faseela_lang cookie is set only when you actively choose a language. No cookie is set on your first visit before any action.

5. Data Sharing

We do not share your personal data with any third parties. Our servers are hosted in the United Kingdom. We do not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or data processing services that would receive your data.

6. Your Rights

Under the UK GDPR and EU GDPR, you have the following rights:

  • Right of access: You may request a copy of any personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to erasure: You may request that we delete personal data we hold about you, subject to our legitimate interests in retaining security logs.
  • Right to object: You may object to processing carried out on the basis of legitimate interests.
  • Right to complain: You have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In the UK, this is the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. In France, it is the CNIL. In Germany, it is the relevant Datenschutzbehörde.
